Home Schooling : What Elementary Math Program Do You Use
For my son, we used Saxon this year. He is advanced and he found it very repetitive and a little tedious. He found that it progressed very slowly and we wound up skipping quite a few lessons because they were reviews of things he had already learned. We were thinking of Horizons for next year. We will be using Sonlight, so I can pretty much choose between Saxon, Horizons, Singapore or Miquon. What do you use? What do you like and dislike about it? Thanks. ~~~ Nobody ~~~
Home Schooling : How To Respond To People Who Dont Understand Homeschooling Special Needs Children
I am homeschooling my son who has PDD. We are relaxed about our homeschooling. It is not like i can say that we do this subject at this time and this subject at that time. I can say that i have homeschooled my older daughter- who has developmental issues, since we pulled her from school after first grade- she is now 17 and she has made amazing progress. Other people have noticed it as well. Now with my younger son, somehow i am getting questions and comments from people that are along the lines of, what do I plan on DOING with him- how long is he going to stay home doing 'nothing' when he can be in a special school where there are special ed teachers who can help him, and blah blah blah. What do I say to this? How do I even begin talking to these totally ignorant people about the subject of homeschooling children with special needs? In additon to having some tips on what to say, i'd appreciate being pointed to some good articles on the advantages of hsing special needs children The last person who did this was someone whom my husband and i approached to ask him to tutor our son in a subject that we felt we weren't able to teach our son ourselves. He ended up calling and telling me that our son needs a lot more than JUST his tutoring, and basically gave me the old 'it's not good for him to just be home...' routine. Well, as you all might have predicted, the tutor did not work out. We're on the lookout for another tutor now. I wish there was some way to 'smell' whether a potential tutor is going to 'give me the business' about homeschooling before he/she gets hired, but my feeling is it's often they just smile and nod their head at the initial interview because they want to get hired, and when they get the job they feel more free to tell you their two cents because they're already involved with your child and feel that it's now their business. I extended the question so i can hear more good thoughts on the subject. Home Schooling : How Would You Handle This Homechooling Dilema
How would you handle the following situation? You are homeschooling your teenage daughter and she is doing very well and has grown incredibly in her homeschooling. There is a family celebration with some relatives out of town, which for whatever reasons, you cannot attend. So you send your homeschooled daughter to the celebration, and she stays by the relatives. While your daughter is there, these relatives talks to your daughter about how she should not be homeschooled, how she should go to school and blah blah. When your daughter comes home, she is less than happy being homeschooled. She has been influenced by these relative. Some months later, this relative calls you to invite your daughter to spend the summer with them. Of course you do not want to send her, and you strongly suspect that if you do, this relative will keep calling and inviting your daughter over for more visits. What excuse would you give this relative, to prevent this visit and all future visits? How can i 'avoid' these relatives?? Never answer the phone when they call?? What if these relatives have been kind to us in many other ways? No, i cannot treat them like a junk call and just not answer the phone. I have to speak to them and do so unoffensively and kindly, but i cannot send my daughter there, and dont want to keep getting these invitations. ~~~ NewSong ~~~

Home Schooling : Why Is Staying In An Abusive Situation Supposed To Be Good For You
I keep reading responses by people who seem to think that being bullied is good for you, that it helps you for later in life, and that for that reason, you shouldn't be homeschooled. Bullying is a form of abuse. .uk/showdoc/40002099/ Children who are bullied psychologically can have the same sort of symptoms of abuse as a child who is psychologically abused by a parent, including depression. Or a person who is psychologically abused by their spouse. When it gets physical, there's no difference between the physical abuse of a peer or the physical abuse of an adult toward a child--both hurt. Would you tell an abused woman to stay in an abusive situation "because it'll help you learn how to deal with people like that"? Would you say that a child should stay in an abusive home because "it'll help them learn how to deal with people like that"? How is bullying any different? Abuse is abuse. Homeschooling doesn't mean being locked up at home!!! I wish people would understand that. There are a few people misconstruing my point. I'm not saying public schools should be done away with; I'm trying to understand why people keep saying that homeschooling is bad because you're not bullied.
