Board Games : What Would Cause A Backgammon Player To Sacrafice Piece To Middle
Playing the computer on backgammon the other night, I rolled like normal, NOT capturing any of the computers pieces. The computer then rolled, put one of his pieces onto the bar, then used his roll to take his piece back off of the bar and play it back in my home, just as if I had captured it, but that never took place. I have never seen or heard of any move like this and don't see the point of this either. Anyone have a clue? ~~~ Greg H ~~~

Board Games : What Is A Good Process For Studying And Learning Chess Openings
I'm an intermediate club level player, but I've never taken much time to learn a lot of chess openings. I know general opening principles (develop quickly, control the center, etc.), and recognize a decent number of openings during play. But I think it's time to buckle down and start studying specific openings and their variations. I'm wondering if anyone has suggestions for a good *process* to use for this study. Suggestions on particularly good books to work with would be welcome too, but more than that, I am trying to set up a solid program. Should I just start with one opening and memorize it? Work through variations one by one? Start with only king openings, or only queen, or...? Is it better to study on my own, or with others at the club? How much time should I spend? And so forth. ~~~ John C ~~~

Board Games : How Can I Break A Plateau And Improve My Chess
I'm a good amateur player, but have never broken that barrier to be really good at chess. I hover somewhere between 1500 and 1650, although I've brushed 1700 at my best. This year, I'd like to break the 1800 barrier. There are a lot of books out there about strategies within the game itself, and finding the best move, but very little written about how to become a good player. Is there any book you would recommend on that subject? Also, what is a good way to improve as a player: Blind chess? Simultaneous games? Analysing your games? Finding a teacher? Etc... Is there a way to find out exactly what your weaknesses are and working on them? That's the sort of advice I'm looking for. Thank you. ~~~ Opinionatedkitten ~~~
