I recently visited a site and was overwhelmed by the amount of comments that seemed very sarcastic and even insulting, in reference to how people from North America may view Ireland. Is this indicative of the feeling most hold in Ireland? Many responses came from Dubliners, but I felt a concern, wishing to visit there next spring without causing offense to the locals. Is it wrong to hope to take in what I percieve to be the local "colour" when I visit? By comparison, I think it's boring when Americans refer to us as living in a land of ice and snow here in Canada, but it's all part of sharing our differences, isn't it? Rockin' Mel : yes, The last thing I want to be is overly sensitive; in fact, the issue was whether or not native Irish could tolerate those from abroad coming over looking for "red-heade leprechauns dancing in the street" and something else about potato farming and quaint cottages...it quite threw me off, as that was not the impression I'd had of the Irish, either. Which is why I ask. Good Grief, thanks so much for clearing up the usage of the word "Eire"...how embarassing!!!! I wonder, what is the correct context for this beautiful word? One doesn't see it used very correctly, over here, I guess. At any rate, it sounds like a resistance to stereotyping is universal, and I guess that's pretty much the limit of the situation...I really had no plans for rushing out looking for toothless old men who subsisted on potatoes and whiskey, and lived in cob houses with donkey and cart parked outside the door...so I should be okay. And, ya, just like here in Canada, there is always more to see in the country than in the bigger centers, so my plans are to take in some of the awesome geography and of course, to take in some of the Guinness!!!
