Birds. I Want To Get Rid Of Canada Geese In A Play Area Will The Geese Fly In And Fly Out Of The Pond.

Someone suggested putting a wire around my pond to prevent the Geese from entering and leaving the water. Will the fence work? Will the Geese ignore the fence and fly in and out of the pond or will they fly off and find a new pond? What do you think? Think like a Goose. ~~~ Mr. PDQ ~~~

Best Answer To Birds Question

Hi If your pond is large enough for them to land they will ignore your wire or fencing for sure! Dont net over the pond as yoy will have injured and trapped birds who dont see it in time to avert the landing. They are migrgating right now and ssuming you live in a cool climate they will be done soon... but if this is because you are in an end destination for them... then welllll Now they dont like irratic moving things or loud noises We have been able to tie plastic grocery bags to metal posts stuck in the ground before and they rattle in the wind and it can help discourage them.. Just be careful yuo dont get any blow off and get around agoose neck etc.. Also Foating a brightly colored rafts in the middle of your pond might work as well.... Not a solid wood one but an inflatable raft..big as you can get or a few small inflateable boats or smaller rafts... swim rings.. you take roap ( not string)and tie it around the entire raft tightly.. then tie it to a weight... can be an anchor or use milk jugs with water in them,, do not use other jugs that had things like antifreeze or other chemicals in them before. also glue the milk jug caps on if they are not screw ons to prevent them from coming off and being eaten by other birds like ducks or future geese. Or you can remove the caps right before you put the jug into the water ..long as the jug is full it will sink. anyway position them( rafts) around the pond away from the edges... Canadians circle before they land scouting out hazards.. if you put enough stuff in the way of the landing zone they will keep on going... They need the water to land well and avoid landing on dry land... and taking off They will not like bright colors either... Yes they can see color. In fact they as well as ducks see more colors than we can.. they see a full spectrum. If you are in cold climate and it were me Id simply just wait for them to pass but if thats not the case then maybe the rafts other inflatables might work? Its pretty hard to change a gooses mind once he thinks he has a good thing going! whatever you do keep in mind things like... could a goose get tangled in or eat what you are using.. if it could pose a hazard then I would not do it.. Also dont substitue balloons for the rafts, boats or swim rings.. they pop and birds eat them and die.. you can also try those fun noodle foam things they are bright and cheap to buy.. also if your goal is too keep the geese away from areas where kids play the fence may do that.. if you fence the pond but leave some bank around it so maybe 5 feet all the way around the geese may be happy to simply hang in the water and sit on the bank and will not leave the fenced area except to fly out.. this is assuming kids are not playing in the water.. Good Luck Wismom

every time they come run out their like an idot and start yelling and they should fly away.

Answer 2

Fencing a certain area would be fine, but you also have to consider that these birds do fly. I used to raise some geese and we had to put fly netting over the top of the fencing.

Answer 4

My husband works on a reservoir, they use noise to scare the geese. They shoot blanks into the air. It works for them, the migrating season is relatively short. The fence will not work so don't waste your money.

Answer 5

Some people use those fake alligators!

Answer 6

A goose doesn't know what a fence is for and won't work. Geese are most afraid of people and something like a scarecrow that looks more like a person will work if it's on the beach. Keeping them out of the water may be impossible.
