I'm confused. Some people say pellets and some people say seeds. I give my bird half pellets and half seeds, but he prefers the seeds and complains when all the seeds are done. I do give him some veggies and some fruit, and a treat now and then. Any suggestions? ~~~ Lilly ~~~

The way i feed my birds is too complicated for some, but they are HAPPY HEALTHY are also in large flights, not cages. One day my Tiels decided not to eat their pellets(Zupreem Breeder cockatiel formula) anymore, I tried many varieties in order to find another one they would eat. they were on pellets/seed, veggies birdy bread,bean mix, scrambled eggs, and many other things. Now, I feed seed, birdy bread made w/soya musca, bugs berries, ants eggs(all from cuttlebone plus) Then I add veggies bean mix, scrambled eggs, freeze dried fruit, clover sprouts and thawed,frozen veggies(no salt). When they are feeding babies, I change the soft food plate every 2 hours, When gravid(I like the word eggnant) I give it 3-4 X daily(removing after 2 hours), during the off season, they get it 1-2 X daily. They always have tiel mix,Spray millet, Bugs berries, Goldenfeast Aussie mix, fresh water in with them.

Answer 1Well, As you can see the diet is extremely important!-along with the diet. You should buy him/her a mix of seed's (Pellets and seeds are fine) be careful to make sure in your mix theres not too much sunflower seeds because this is extremely fatting, Its best if you do 50/50 of budgie seeds canary seeds. Make sure you have fresh fruit and Vege.'s in his/hers diet. Never give your cockatiel alcohol, avocado or chocolate - these can kill your cockatiel. Also avoid asparagus, aubergine or eggplant, cabbage, caffeine (tea and coffee), junk food, milk and cream, raw potato, and rhubarb (including the leaves). And make sure theres plenty of LOVE!
Answer 2The best thing is primaraly pelets with some seed. Cockatiels on an all seed diet are prone to fatty liver disease and obesity. Don't give your bird more when it complains, this will encourage him to eat the pellets (just make sure he is eathing them) Vegtables are fine as are small amouts of fruit. Dont' feed a lot of fruit as cockatiels aren't big fruit eaters and the natural sugars aren't good for them. The can also have things like plain pasta, cool oatmel ect. As far as veggies go just make sure not to feed avacado as it is toxic to birds.
