Diabetes : Is It Illegal Within South Australia To Prick A Finger Of A Non Diabetic Without Consent
I work in a nursing home as a personal carer. We as carers have been asked to check the BSL's of every resident; diabetic or not. As a nursing student I disagree with this and am considering it as assualt. After all most of the residents have dementia, and I'm almost certain consent has not been given by the guardians. ~~~ nicihei ~~~

Answer 1its a prick on the finger.. Not a thumbscrew.
Answer 2I would think it is in the best interest of the patients. Why don't you check the employee's handbook to find out about this or ask your boss. Call your local health department to find out answers... I am sure you and the nursing home are doing the right thing. If you totally not sure and exhausted all leads.. then consider asking the nursing home to have guardians sign something it is . Good luck as a nursing student - you will go far with because you care :)
Answer 3in America that would be assault. i don't understand why you would be pricking the finger of a non diabetic person. I'm a caregiver too and we only do the diabetics and only if they can't do it themselves.
Answer 4A fingerstick blood glucose check is not a procedure that requires consent. If it was we would have to get a patient to sign a consent four times a day everyday and that is just silly. Obviously any patient has the right to refuse ANY procedure or treatment so if they verbally say NO they do not want a fingerstick and you do it anyway...that is physical assault. Edited to add: Sometimes you check the sugars of non-diabetic patients if they are on steriods such as Solu-Medrol. These medications drive blood sugars sky high.
