A lot of girls like to have a trophy they can show off and the engagement ring, whilst supposedly showing others that you're no longer available, is usually their first trophy. Traditionally both engagement and wedding rings were gold, although engagement rings don't have a very long tradition, 9ct gold being the hardest wearing due to the low level of gold within it. 22ct is the softest because it has a greater gold content. Obviously the more gold the more expensive, so it was based on how much you want or can afford to spend. All other types of metal have become wedding and engagement rings through fashion alone. If you don't really wear jewelery it's immaterial what you get so, were I you, I would choose a ring that you like, and that you can put up with wearing during the times that other people expect you to wear it, fanily gathering etc. Another consideration is cost, do you want you boyfriend to pay through the nose for a ring that you don't feel you want to wear that much anyway? Some girls do but unless he is seriously rich and won't notice the cost, asking him to buy you a 20,000 dollar ring will do nothing to endear you to him. Have you explained to him that you're not very keen on wearing rings? He might be expecting you to wear it all the time because he feels you should show others that you're his and his alone? Sorry it's an animal thing... I can't remember the reason for the giving of engagement rings but I seem to recall that it is the sealing of a verbal contract of intention of marriage. If for some reason he doesn't fulfill that contract it provides the injured woman a financial recompence. Again I don't recall which but wedding rings are either a convienient method of giving dowry, a fixed value piece of gold is generally easier to manage that 20 goats, or it is a mark of ownership of property. I'm sure web searches will provide an answer if you're interested. All in all make it clear to him how you feel about jewelery in general, buy a ring you like that won't cripple him financially, and think more of your relationship than you do the ring. Best of luck

Answer 1platinum is the best, very hard and durable and beautiful, yet the most expensive, but for a wedding ring it is worth it. go for it.
Answer 2First you have to know if you want traditional gold or a color that looks more like silver. If you want yellow gold, then go for yellow gold, I'd say at least 14k. If you want a silver color then it depends more on budget, since you can get white gold or platinum. Platinum is more expensive and more durable, though looks about the same as white gold. Titanium is darker in color (see the link below).
