Wait at least two or three hours. Give the horse time to wind down and relax. if you feed him too soon, his body will just burn off the meal, and he'll be hungry again.

Answer 4

Hi Krystle, I talk from Brazil. Here, to feed only with fresh grass, I don't wait any time, because it's safe to a horse eat grass after the work. BUT PAY ATTENTION!!! You must be careful with ration, grains or other kind of food different of fresh grass. Be careful also with pricked grass, because it can ferment. NEVER GIVE THESE KINDS OF FOOD IMMEDIATELY AFTER THE WORK. Here, with my horses in Brazil, I wait an hour at least after the work to give these kinds of food with safety. If you wait more, it will be more secure. I prefer don't take risks in this subject, even though I had done a light work. In each country this rule may be a little different, because of different weather conditions and different types of food. Please, I'm from Brazil and I don't know what lunging means. Could you explain for me?

Answer 5

You should wait until your horse is completely cooled down and the heartbeat is back to normal. Usually 30 minutes to an hour is sufficient time - 30 minutes if the workout has been extremely light. Anything before this I would not do and even so, I would probably keep a slight eye on him for signs of colic. I usually give about 30-45 or so minutes (which sometimes actually ends up to be the entire time I spend grooming him after I ride!).

Answer 6

You have to worry more about after they are fed than before. If I have to ride after feeding it's at least 2/3 hours, if before 1 hour would do it. I never let my horse drink or eat after riding until they are cooled down at least an hour.

Answer 7

What we do is after light work like that is, leave the horse alone to cool off, roll wind down. Then we bring it in, tie it in the alley. While it is there we might pick the stall or do what ever, giving it about 1/2 an hour to just stand there. Then we give it a good brushing pick it's feet. Then we take the halter off let them go to their stall. So, after a light workout, we probably give them an hour before we feed.

Answer 8

wait about half an hour

Answer 9

i usually cool out my horse then groom him (grooming takes atleast 30min) b4 putting him away in his stall with hay. i leave him to munch on hay while i put all my stuff away and sweep up after myself then i feed grain. so about an hour after i ride give or take 15 minutes he doesn't get a lot of grain and isn't one to scarf it down but i think it's really important to have hay in the belly b4 grain.

Answer 10

It will depend on the amount of work but i usually have thoroughly cooled him down when walkinh him around after work and then i wait intill he is completely back to normal. It varies with the amount of work but when he is no longer hot and has cooled is the earliest you can feed him!

Answer 11

I normally wait an hour or two...

Answer 12

a they can be fed as soon as they aren't warm, that way they are less prone to colic.
