Best Answer To Horses Question
Good quality foal feed is important. They have a different balance of nutrients than adult horse feed. Important factors include low sugars/carbohydrates,proper amounts of Lysine and the ratio of calcium and phosphorus. Ideally checking with your equine vet for detailed information since she/he knows your horse. Some additional tips are: 1. do not over feed 2. check your colt's weight regularly, a foal should not gain too rapidly or should he become fat. extra weight and overfeeding contributes to DODs and joint/skeletal stress. 3. Always supply clean fresh water, minerals and salt. cautious when adding supplements, since they can make the nutrient ratios supplied by a well balanced feed off balance and this can cause issues. 5. Check label ingredients and guaranteed analysis for the nutrient balance of your feed. 6. Different breeds of horses grow at different rates and overfeeding will not increase height in a horse nor will it help the skeleton to grow faster, that is genetic, except in severe cases. Enjoy your baby, I am sure he is a sweetheart!

Answer 1I fed mine Horseman's Edge by Purina and Stradegy. I also gave him all the quality hay and/or pasture he could eat for at least 16 hours every day (the other 8 hours he was stalled in the barn) He is now almost 6 years old 16hh and still growing! (filling out now). You might want to give him a milk supplement. I think 4 months is too young to be away from Mom. For 2 reason, he should still be nursing for a couple more months at least and mom often has a good hand in teaching manners.
Answer 2I agree with PRS....however I also bought a 4-month old colt last year..which I thought was young, but the lady I bought him from had bought him from a big ranch a month BEFORE that, which means he was 3 months when she got him....I couldn't believe it!! But we usually feed our growing colts a 16% (protein) grain, often a mix with corn, pellets, molasses...growing foals need very special feeding care because obviously, they are growing and need the nutrients. HOWEVER you want to be careful not to feed him *too* much because if he grows too fast, then his bones will grow faster than his tendons (in his pasterns/legs) and can cause problems. This happened to a colt where I used to work. But it can be prevented by proper rations....your best bet if you're not familiar with caring for young horses is to consult a vet and have him work out the proper amount.
Answer 3Omelene Feed is great it has a special formula called growth jusr for younger guys. If you go to and take a couple of quizes you get a coupon for a free bag of feed.

Answer 5Its easy! Go to your local feed store. Not the local discount place. Tell them what you have, and you want the best! Feed store people are educated on feed, discount places are educated on selling. Need I say more? Like I've said before, when it comes to feed. farriers, fly sprays, .c. You get what you pay for/ Go cheap, and it will cost you more in the long run............
Answer 6When we had babies, we only fed START TO FINISH MARE FOAL PELLETS in a creep feeder it picked at it's mom's alfalfa hay. Then of course mom's milk. We still use Start To Finish on our geldings. Never have used other suppliments, never felt or saw the need. They do perfectly on it. A foal can be started on it at 7 days, feeding 3 lbs. daily until the age of 6 months. Then, 1 lb. daily to 1 year 1/2 lb. daily from 1 yr. on up.
