The difference is that the tympanic thermometer is an infrared radiation thermometer directed at the tympanic temperature capable of rapid assessment of accurate temperatures while digital could be used through other parts-oral,rectal,axillary and takes a little longer than the tympanic.

Answer 1A digital thermometer is just that... a digital readout, usually used in the mouth (orally). A tympanic thermometer is a thermometer that is inserted in the ear. The temp. is measured in 1-3 seconds. They are used for children and confused persons because of their speed and comfort. Note the normal temp. range is degrees Fahrenheit. This thermometer should not be used for an ear disorder or if there is drainage from the temp. SITE is always charted
