Other Environment : What Are The Important Environmental Andor Ecological Guidelines That Are Needed For A Manmade Lake
Im trying to look into improving a lake a a ymca camp i staff at during the summer. There is a 125 acre man-made lake and i was wondering what are essential or important rules to follow for the upkeep of this little ecosystem. i heard that 20% should be weeds, but as in pH levels or population counts or other things. i just was wondering what i would need to do(scientificly) to help out and greatly improve the lake(ecologicaly) and inturn the environment. any help or rediretion to places that can help is greatly appreciated. ~~~ Ross H ~~~

You should check with your local college or state college that has a Natural Resource Management Engineering program. I am sure they would be more than happy to advise or possibly even help

Answer 2Take a look at the site below. Unless you've got some background or a chunk of change to fund the improvements, you may be in over your head. Before you do anything make sure you apply for the proper permits with the county, state, or local water control board.
Answer 3Amy makes a good point by providing a reference on control of nutrients. Despite her warnings to "not get in over our head", you can certainly learn a few basics of limnology (stream and lake science) that will serve you well. A first requirement for a human-made lake is that it be safe, so you need to think about the stability of the dam, when it was last inspected, structural issues, etc. Nutrient control is probably the second most important issue. The most important indicator of lake condition (besides what fish are in the lake) is the level of dissolved oxygen (DO) , both at the surface and at depth. To measure that, you need a DO meter, and there you are with an expensive question on your hands. In your position, I would approach the lake as a teaching tool and get some basic limnology texts for yourself and your YMCA campers. Here are references from Wikipedia: Gerald A.
