Answer 2Go to a farm supply store, buy a bottle of 7% iodine solution, mix it half and half with peroxide, then add an equal amount of water. Mix only what you'll use at one time. For one application, use a cup of each. Wash the wounds with this. If it doesn't start healing, call a vet.
Answer 3First of all, Don't use peroxide!!! Peroxide burns, and will destroy granulation tissue-Just use warm water and a mild soap solution-, wash well and rinse well- If the cuts are deep enough to need stitching, get a vet!! Make sure you exercise gently, daily, for the swelling. Barb wire and horses just don't mix well- re-fence if you can afford it, or run a smooth hot wire just inside the barb if you can't.
Answer 4First of all, horses should never be pastured with barbwire fence. Now, clean the wound with Ivory soap and warm water, then put on a triple antibiotic cream, a generic brand from the store is fine. Also if the weather is warm enough use the hose on his leg for 20 minutes twice daily. Also give him a tetnus booster, you can buy it at a farm supply store (I use Rural King), give him 1 cc of that. If he hasn't been given the tetnus vaccine before, you'll need to give him a booster in 30 days. If he isn't better in 2 or 3 days or if he becomes lame, or if he worsens at all, call your vet immediately. If I called the vet out for every bump and scratch, I'd be broke. Save the vet for the big stuff and if the little stuff gets bad. Another group to ask this question in is a Yahoo Group called askavet. There is a lot of horse people on call there, and they'll give you free advice. Also there is a vet on call to the site, and he can give you advice too. Good luck
Answer 5For the swelling, cold hose the leg, and then treat the wound. Betadine is a good disinfectant. Just get some from the store, find a pair of gloves, and soak a gauze pad with it. Then clean the wound with it. Make sure you clean it thoroughly, and a little bit around the wound too. You want to get rid of all the germs and bacteria, and eliminate any possible infection. Then find some ointment and put that on the wound to help heal it. Keep an eye on the wound, clean it with the betadine several times a day. If it gets worse or infected then call the vet. is a community of all sorts of horse people; you can ask there too if you'd like.
