umm..i don't agree w/ the guy above me. i've maintained a and i've played 3 varsity sports for 3 years too, and i haven't had a single school "come to me". but back to your question, colleges look at varsity athletes who maintain good grades the same as they would look at a kid that keeps a 15hour/week job and maintains good grades. one extracurricular doesn't outweigh another. they just want to see that you've dedicated your time to something that you're passionate about - not just becuase you think it'll look good on your resume.

Answer 1If you are looking to get a scholarship to go to a D1 school you must be outstanding in a sport that they see a need to fill. If you are a kick @ field hockey goal tender but they already have 3 but they don't need that ,you would be out of luck. See your high school councilor to go over what NCAA will require of to the Rice head coaches to let them know you are interested, it does make a difference that you want to go there.
Answer 2Don't worry. if you are a good athlete with good grades, the schools will come to you! The only thing you don't have control over is size. Being big enough or fast enough for high school is completely different fro the big college level.
