Studying Abroad. What Are The Graduation Requirements For Secondary School.

I have a friend (we are Americans) who is planning on spending her senior year in Britain with a family member. What are the graduation requirements for her? Would she have to take the GSCE's before arrivie seeing that for most kids over would be completed with those and working on their A-levels. I hope someone can be informative on the subject or offer an informative website. It would be very much appreciated. ~~~ Lissa J ~~~

Best Answer To Studying Abroad Question

Most schools/colleges will accept her to study but she will have to pay overseas student fees and schools may not have that facility, colleges usually do. There is no specific entry requirement, she would be able to join in the classes with a view to taking AS courses and possibly A2 courses alongside if the full A level is required. Each school/college would approach the situation in their own way. Providing the school with grade average and some understanding of the curriculum content of current courses would help them come to a decision. She will need a student visa before arriving and to get that she needs the acceptance letter from the college and evidence that funds are available to pay fees and maintenance and accommodation. As she is probably under 18 then there should be information on the suitability of the UK sponsor, the relationship; age; available accommodation etc. One of the biggest differences she would find is the specialisation at an earlier age. If she is planning to go to an American University she should check out the requirements and what studies are most appropriate in the UK As she plans to stay with a family member, she should start with the schools/colleges in the area. If the family member is relocating/moving to the UK for work etc. don't forget that there are a number of American schools here. They are all fee paying schools, she would then graduate. In the UK that doesn't happen. You just take the exams and pass or fail, no ceremony.

what year is senior year? Our kids do their GCSE course work in year 10 11 (aged 14-16) . They sit their final exams in spring/summer of Y11. They start their AS/A levels in y 12 (aged 16-17) and should they pass the AS then do the go one to do the full A level in year 13 (aged 17-18) try this website: .uk/

By graduation requirements I'm assuming you mean what is the minimum number of exams you have to pass before you can leave school? If so then the answer is none, zero, zilch. Technically you can totally flunk your exams and thats it. There's no going back a year or no pressure to re-sit. As far as A levels are concerned you normally have to have passed a GCSE in the appropriate subject, you'll have to forgive me but as it has been 20yrs since I was last at school I'm not exactly up to speed on the ins and outs of things.
